Gonzaga University cultivating leadership and leaders

Gonzaga and Cultivating Leadership

How do they do it?

I am a ZAG fan! I have been for many years. My bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in Organizational Leadership and Communications, and I have rooted for this team since I was accepted to the University. My heart almost stopped at the end of Saturday’s game. Even if they had lost (and I am glad they didn’t)  I would still believe that Gonzaga is one of the best schools in the nation. They cultivate the best leaders too! GU truly lives out their mission statement.

Gonzaga’s mission statement is that the “university is an exemplary learning community that educates students for lives of leadership and service for the common good.” The benefits that both the learners and the community get from this facility are the main emphasis. It extends them through: Improving Lives, Transforming societies.

Gonzaga taught me how to cultivate this leadership so I would be exceptionally equipped to serve those in the world around me. They teach, model, and set the expectation that everyone can be the best version of themselves. These values are also evident in the amazing basketball team.

  • The University lives its values – it is the nutrients that feed each student’s mind, body, and soul.
  • The Staff and Teachers – encourage self-evaluation so students can prune the things that no longer serve and allow growth to happen.
  • Leadership – Serve first, create trust, build on strengths, create opportunity for growth, and make shifts when necessary to create greater strength.
  • The Students – Are brought into the community with love, respect, and the expectation to learn how to produce good fruit for the common good.

When any organization produces good fruit and expects it to be produced in return, anything is possible. Whether it’s winning a sports game, serving your community or making a profitable bottom line, it all comes down to what Gonzaga would say…improving lives and transforming societies.

I struggle and strive every day to be the best version of myself. My goal is to have my values of kindness, honesty, integrity, love, and service be reflected every day to the world around me. It is never easy to be as consistent as possible, but the reward is great! How are you being the best version of yourself in your personal/professional leadership journey? How are your values evident to those around you? Are you ready for change? Are you ready to act?
